Joseph Pilates brought his unique method of physical conditioning to the United States in the early 1920s. Since the 1930s, Pilates exercise has been performed by members of the New York dance community, who have used his system for rehabilitation, injury prevention and general conditioning. Over the years, his system flourished quietly underground around the US, exploding into mass popularity at the end of the 20th century when its profile was raised by celebrities and the mass media.
Pilates exercise is taught on mats, and also by means of specially-designed equipment that provides physical assistance and/or resistance to the patient or client. In a rehabilitation context, this equipment can help an injured person perform functional movement successfully, leading to safe recovery.
Every person who comes into the Pilates Studio will have a fitness screening, which will ensure the exercises selected for that person will be safe and appropriate.
One-to-one and small group Pilates sessions are available. These sessions complement and progress treatments given by other health care professionals.
With doctors, osteopaths, physiotherapists and other health care professionals, we can cater for people recovering from injury or surgery.
